Review of the OSMO Mobile 6: My Favorite Stabilizer

The DJI Osmo Mobile 6 is like having a professional camera right in the palm of your hand, but without the burden of carrying heavy equipment. This gimbal doesn’t just stabilize your smartphone with the elegance of a ballet dancer, it transforms video recording into an experience as smooth as gliding across an ice rink (without the risk of falling, of course).

With its advanced stabilization technology, every shot feels cinematic, and every movement is captured with impeccable fluidity. Whether you’re walking, running, or filming in more dynamic environments, the Osmo Mobile 6 ensures that your footage remains steady and smooth, giving it that professional, polished look that was once reserved for high-end gear. It’s the perfect tool for content creators, vloggers, or anyone looking to elevate their smartphone videography.

What I Love

  • Compact, Lightweight, and Durable Design
The DJI Osmo Mobile 6 is incredibly portable, making it easy to carry around for long shooting sessions or on-the-go filming. Its lightweight build means it won’t weigh you down, while its durable construction ensures it can withstand daily use without showing signs of wear.
  • Top-Notch Gimbal Stabilization
The gimbal stabilization technology is top-tier, offering smooth and steady footage, even in challenging conditions. Whether you’re moving quickly or capturing fast-paced action, your shots will look professional and fluid.
  • Intuitive Controls and an App That Maximizes Its Potential
The controls are easy to learn and use, even for beginners, and the accompanying app adds a whole new level of functionality. With features like ActiveTrack, panorama modes, and time-lapse, it’s easy to enhance your creative possibilities. Plus, the app continuously gets updates that unlock even more features, making it a powerful tool for content creators.

What Could Be Improved

  • Shorter Battery Life Compared to the Insta360 Flow/Flow Pro
While the battery is decent, it doesn’t quite compare to the longer battery life offered by the Insta360 Flow or Flow Pro. If you’re planning on doing longer shoots, you might find yourself reaching for a charger sooner than expected.
  • No Infinite Tracking
Unlike some of its competitors, the Osmo Mobile 6 doesn’t offer infinite tracking for subjects. This means that while it does a great job following your movements, it has some limitations in continuous, seamless tracking.
  • No Subject Tracking in Third-Party Apps
Although the app from DJI offers fantastic features, third-party apps currently do not support subject tracking, which could limit some advanced filming techniques for creators who prefer to use other apps alongside the Osmo Mobile 6.

Stabilization on Another Level

DJI is renowned for its drones, but when it comes to accessories for content creators, they certainly don’t fall short. The Osmo Mobile 6 is their flagship gimbal for smartphones, designed to keep your phone steady and level while filming. Essentially, it’s a handle with a three-axis stabilizer and a handy, extendable selfie stick.

Some gimbals are too bulky and hard to transport; others are so small that holding them comfortably becomes a challenge. But the OM 6 hits the sweet spot: compact when folded, yet robust and well-balanced when extended with your phone mounted. It’s perfectly engineered to offer the stability of a larger gimbal while still being travel-friendly.

Additionally, it comes with a mini tripod that screws into the base, a USB-A to USB-C cable for charging the battery, a magnetic clamp, and a microfiber pouch to store everything neatly. This thoughtful inclusion of accessories makes it easy to keep your gear organized and ready for action, whether you’re filming on the go or setting up for a more stationary shoot.

In short, the Osmo Mobile 6 offers a complete, compact solution for stabilizing your smartphone footage without compromising on portability or performance. It’s a must-have for anyone looking to up their videography game.

Magnetic Mount and Ease of Use

It doesn’t matter if you’re using an iPhone or an Android device—the OM 6 offers compatibility with a wide range of smartphones (check the DJI compatibility list to make sure yours is supported). The magnetic clamp securely holds your phone in place, and the central magnet attaches it to the gimbal arm with a satisfying click. The best part? You can pop your phone on and off in seconds. If you get a call while filming, just detach it and put it back without any interruptions or hassle.

Opening and closing the OM 6? It may take a bit of practice at first, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll have it ready to record in just a few seconds. When you unfold the gimbal, it powers on automatically, and if you have an iPhone with MagSafe previously paired via Bluetooth, the Mimo app opens instantly. This seamless integration makes the setup process smooth and user-friendly, ensuring that you spend less time fiddling with settings and more time capturing great footage.

The combination of the magnetic mount and quick setup makes the OM 6 incredibly convenient for spontaneous filming, and the user-friendly design ensures that even newcomers to gimbals can get up and running quickly. Whether you’re a professional content creator or just someone looking to improve your videos, the OM 6 delivers on both ease of use and performance.

Simple but Powerful Controls

The control layout of the OM 6 is intuitive and easy to learn, even for beginners. Here’s a breakdown of the buttons:

  • M Button: Switches between stabilization modes or turns the gimbal on/off.
  • Recording/Photo Button: Captures content with ease.
  • Switch Button:
    • Once: Switches between the front and rear cameras.
    • Twice: Toggles between portrait and landscape modes.
    • Three times: Switches between photo and video modes.

On the left side of the buttons, you have a joystick that lets you control the gimbal’s movement manually. Also, on the left side of the handle, there’s the zoom and focus wheel, a very useful addition to this series. By pressing the wheel, you can activate manual focus, and by turning it, you control the zoom.

Lastly, a trigger on the front allows you to:

  • Double tap: Reset the gimbal’s position.
  • Press and hold: Lock the view in place.

Though it might seem like a lot of controls, the truth is that they’re easy to grasp quickly, giving you instant access to the most important functions without wasting any time. Whether you’re shooting a quick video or carefully composing your shots, these controls provide the flexibility to adapt to any filming situation.

Impeccable Stabilization

The stabilization offered by this gimbal is outstanding. Tested with an iPhone 13, the gimbal automatically keeps the phone level (and can be easily recalibrated if necessary). The available stabilization modes include:

  • Follow Mode: The general-use mode, where the camera follows the movements of the gimbal while keeping level with the horizon.
  • Tilt Locked Mode: Similar to Follow, but with no tilting up or down.
  • FPV Mode: This mode allows the gimbal to move in all directions, perfect for dynamic shots.
  • SpinShot Mode: Rotates the camera using the joystick, creating dramatic effects.

The gimbal’s movements are smooth and, for lack of a better word, “logical.” That is, they respond exactly as you’d expect, without any surprises. This makes the experience incredibly enjoyable and, above all, intuitive. Whether you’re filming steady, smooth shots or adding dynamic effects, the OM 6 provides consistent and reliable performance.

The DJI Osmo Mobile 6 stands out as an ideal option for those seeking high-quality stabilization, an easy-to-use experience, and a compact design—without sacrificing performance. Whether you’re a professional content creator or a hobbyist, this gimbal delivers all the features you need for flawless video capture.

DJI Mimo App: Refined and Intuitive

The DJI Mimo app feels both refined and intuitive. The user interface layout is simple and easy to understand, with shooting modes displayed at the bottom and selectable via left and right swipes. In addition to video and photo modes, Mimo enables the OM 6 to automatically capture panoramic photos, as well as slow-motion videos, hyperlapse, time-lapse, and “dyna-zoom” (essentially Hitchcock’s dolly zoom effect). It also offers two special modes: Parents&Kids, which automatically captures family interactions from a static position, and Story, which allows you to shoot and edit short videos (including transitions, music, and color correction) to immediately share on social media.

The OM 6 also features ActiveTrack 6.0, DJI’s object tracking system. This system can automatically recognize and track faces, but it can also follow any object if you draw a box around it in the camera view. As the object moves, the gimbal adjusts the camera view to keep it within the frame. This is fantastic for vloggers, whether walking with the gimbal or setting it up on a nearby tripod, as they can move around without worrying about going out of frame.

However, while the OM 6’s tracking is impressive, the Insta360 Flow Pro offers faster and smoother tracking, and its design allows for “infinite” subject tracking, where the gimbal follows the subject even if they move around. The OM 6, on the other hand, will rotate to a certain point but will eventually hit its limit and won’t be able to follow the subject if they move out of the frame.

Price and Availability of the DJI Osmo Mobile 6

The DJI Osmo Mobile 6 is now available, starting at £125 on the DJI UK website and $139 on Amazon US. It comes in two color finishes, Slate Gray and Platinum Gray, and can be purchased in a bundle with the DJI Mic (1st generation) for £344.

That being said, there are a few areas where I found the Insta360 Flow Pro, which is slightly more expensive and part of a newer generation, to be more impressive than the Osmo Mobile 6. The Flow Pro offers a longer battery life (around 10 hours compared to the OM 6’s 6.5 hours), and it features a second USB-C port that allows it to double as a power bank, sharing its battery with a phone or another device. The Flow Pro is also compatible with Apple’s DockKit system for iPhones, meaning it supports subject tracking not only through its companion app but also through the native iPhone camera app and over 200 other camera-related apps (including TikTok, Zoom, and Blackmagic Camera). With the OM 6, subject tracking works only through the Mimo app.

However, the OM 6 still offers a more pleasant user experience, with better-placed physical controls and a smoother gimbal stabilization movement. So, instead of being a distant competitor to the Insta360 Flow Pro, it stands as a worthy alternative that some users might prefer for its simplicity, ease of use, and ergonomic design.
